Litter

Use your cursor to view the damage that cigarettes can cause.

Almost half of the litter items on our streets are cigarette butts. In 1993, cigarette butts thrown on our streets nationally weighed as much as 30,800 large elephants. The average adult elephant weighs 6 tons. Can you calculate how many pounds of cigarette butts were thrown on our streets in 1993? Cigarette butts are often washed into our rivers, lakes and oceans. Birds, fish and other animals may eat them by mistake. Animals have no way to digest the filters and they may die. A cigarette butt filter may take as long as 25 years to decompose. This makes them a danger to wildlife for a long time.
