Tobacco growing hurts the ability of the soil to grow food and other crops. Tobacco uses up the nutrients from the soil much faster than any other crop. Because of this, tobacco growers need to use very large amounts of fertilizer. The amount of fertilizer used for tobacco growing makes the soil unfit for food crops. For example, in Africa, farmers had to wait three years before they could grow anything else on land that was used for growing tobacco. It took that long before the land was fit (healthy) enough to grow food crops.
