The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory
The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL) is one of nine laboratories of its kind in the world
and the only one in the Western Hemisphere. It was established in August of 1990 and dedicated in
Tallahassee, Florida, on October 1, 1994, by the Vice President of the United States. The NHMFL is a
unique federal-state partnership supported by the National Science Foundation and the State of Florida. It is
operated by Florida State University, the University of Florida, and Los Alamos National Laboratory in
New Mexico, with facilities at all three sites.
From 1990 to 1995, the NHMFL brought together distinguished faculty from many science and engineering
disciplines, world-class facilities, and high-tech, state-of-the-art equipment. It quickly became a world
leader in magnet-related research and technology. Research at the NHMFL has implications and
applications for medicine, energy, communications and electronics, the environment, transportation, and
materials research and development.
