Edgington was one of seven teen-agers in the operating room as part
of the I Can Quit — No Problem smoking cessation program.
The students — all from Fort Myers High School — were challenged to
remain nicotine-free for one month. If successful, they each receive
$100.
I Can Quit is based on similar programs in Tampa and Jacksonville and
follows a “scared straight” approach, said Lisa Munizza, program
consultant for the area American Lung Association, which
co-sponsored the program.
Students observed operations on two smokers diagnosed with cancer
and met with people who lost their voice boxes because of smoking.
There also was an educational component that taught students about
smoking-related diseases and coping skills.
Lee Memorial Health System, the Wellness Center and Waterman
Broadcasting are sponsors of the program, which began in
mid-January.
